Director, Emissions Reduction & Compliance

The Emissions Reduction & Compliance (ERC) business unit is seeking a talented individual to lead and drive the strategic growth of the services as Director. Reporting to the Executive Vice President, and overseeing the ERC team, the Director will provide leadership and technical advice for engineering and environmental projects encountered by the team. As Director, you will have overall financial and operational accountabilities for the ERC service, lead business development activities, and work with senior ERC leaders to maintain the group’s strong reputation for quality and risk management in industry, commercial and institutional settings.

This position requires a leader with demonstrated experience managing large, multi-layered teams preferably in a consulting environment. The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of industry which is the group’s largest client segment and have the ability to strategically drive growth and market share for permitting and reporting, sampling and investigation and consulting services. The candidate would ideally also have experience in leveraging the group’s engineering capabilities in ventilation/air quality and water verticals to drive exponential growth in support of the company’s strategy. Strong communication skills among a diverse, experienced, and competent staff are a must, along with the critical thinking skills needed to generate effective partnerships with other divisions to drive growth and efficiency in new ways. The candidate has a desire to share their knowledge and keen interest in developing the talented leaders within the team.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Provide leadership to the ERC team with direct management responsibility for inspiring its managers and senior staff
  • Gain staff’s trust by leading by example as an ambassador for company’s culture and best interests, and work collaboratively with networks of leaders internally and externally to execute strategies for growth and continuous improvement
  • Promote the attitude and innovation needed to drive quality of work and technical excellence
  • Integrate career development and succession planning initiatives of key staff with regularly monitored business plans
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures and hold team accountable for the same

Strategic Planning

  • Be active in the industrial community and consider regulatory requirements and environmental trends or concerns in the strategic planning process for the ERC business such as sustainability or lowering carbon emissions for example
  • Work with ERC leaders to strategically expand traditional environmental services within the group through geographic expansion, service expansion and partnering with other divisions
  • Devise new operational and business development strategies to scale new engineering capabilities in water and air emission / ventilation
  • Convey the purpose and essence of the group’s strategic plan so all staff understand their role in the group’s success in achieving all business goals
  • Work collaboratively with company technology leaders to improve efficiency and quality
  • Prepare and deliver on annual business plans

Business Development Responsibilities

  • Understand the differences in market opportunities between different ERC services and devise business development programs that optimally deploy resources
  • Take the lead in recognizing new market opportunities within industry and develop networks with leaders in other business units to identify opportunities in commercial, public and real estate markets
  • Oversee the management of the business development program of the department
  • Partner with the Marketing Group to devise tactics such as social media, speaking engagements, leverage company’s Practise Leadership organization to enhance the team’s business development program
  • Meet/exceed new business targets as outlined in the annual business plan

Financial And Administrative Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate good business knowledge and implement measures to continue to increase group margins and financial performance
  • Ensure that group budgets are prepared on time and that profit and utilization targets are met
  • Support preparation and negotiation of proposals and contracts with prospective and existing clients
  • Ensure employees and direct reports submit internal reporting information on a timely basis
  • Effective management of work in progress (WIP) to ensure work is billed accurately and on a timely basis

Supervision of Staff

  • Ensure the well-being and safety of the team
  • Ensure that group resources are properly allocated
  • Provide leadership and technical assistance to employees under supervision
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to staff
  • Support career development as well as group succession planning
  • Performance management and discipline
  • Interviewing and hiring new staff in conjunction with Operation Managers

Maintaining Quality Control

  • Participate in quality control initiatives
  • Maintain processes to continually improve work quality and efficiency

What You Bring To The Team

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering
  • Professional designation preferred (P. Eng.)
  • 15 to 20 years of related experience ideally in a consulting environment
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience managing and growing large teams of technical staff
  • Knowledge and ideally a network within the industrial sector
  • Experience developing and executing strategic initiatives and business development plans
  • Experience growing an engineering team in water/water treatment, air quality/ventilation or process engineering considered an asset
  • Spirit of innovation to lever technology to improve quality, efficiency, and coordination
  • Excellent organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
