We are seeking a Shear Operator with a high regard for safety for opportunities in Abbotsford, Burnaby, Surrey, and other areas of BC! This role can be based out of one location or can be flexible with travel options in the lower mainland as well as Nanaimo, Kelowna, Campbell River, Prince George and more; the options are endless depending on your preferences. You will be responsible for safe operation of a mid-sized excavator with a mobile shear attachment, sorting, cutting, and processing scrap metal to specifications. This is a full-time, year-round job opportunity with many opportunities for increased earnings through overtime and site-based project work. You will be reporting to either the location's Operations Manager or Yard Foreman.
Day Shift Schedule for all locations: Monday to Friday, 7am – 4pm
Night Shift Schedule for Burnaby location: Monday to Friday 2pm – 10pm
Priority Locations: Abbotsford, Burnaby, and Surrey.
Other Available Locations: Kelowna, Nanaimo, Prince George, Campbell River.
Compensation:
  • $35/hr – $40/hr (some flexibility depending on length of experience and ability to operate multiple machines)

Responsibilities:
  • Handles and organizes materials based on customer requirements using tools like buckets, thumbs, and shears.
  • Moves materials in and out of bins, trailers, rail cars, and dump areas.
  • Identifies potential hazards and takes steps to ensure safety and protect the environment.
  • Performs basic upkeep tasks such as oiling, adjusting blades, and checking tension.
  • Contributes ideas to help shape and improve work processes.
  • Supports efforts to evaluate and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Learns about and helps apply top practices from the industry.
  • Works independently when operating at remote locations.

Compensation:
  • Over five years of hands-on experience operating various heavy machinery, including excavators, material handlers, and wheel loaders.
  • Background in scrap yard or recycling facility operations is essential.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using equipment outfitted with bucket and thumb attachments.
  • Previous involvement in scrap metal recycling, including the use of shear attachments or participation in demolition projects.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background screening.
  • Strong mechanical skills and excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Effective communication and customer service abilities.
  • Committed to maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Willingness to work flexible shifts and travel as needed.
  • Required to undergo initial and ongoing random drug and alcohol testing due to compliance with federally regulated client operations.
