In a rapidly evolving job market, understanding hiring trends and challenges is essential for businesses to navigate effectively.

To evaluate the hiring challenges faced in 2023 and shed light on the hiring landscape shaping 2024, Fuze HR Solutions extended an exclusive survey invitation to our recognized and respected industry leaders’ client base spanning various industries.

Persistent Talent Shortage: Challenges in 2023 and Anticipated Trends for 2024

The survey found that 71% of the respondents agreed that, in 2023, they struggled to find people with the right qualifications for the job. The lack of skilled workers was the second most agreed-on challenge.

Looking ahead, respondents anticipated similar challenges in 2024. 57% declared finding and hiring qualified workers a prevalent obstacle for the upcoming year.
These results are in line with the insights from the 2023 Employ Recruiter Nation Report, where a majority of talent professionals (57%) anticipated hiring challenges due to a shortage of quality candidates (58%).

Digging deeper: Insights into Skill Gaps and Future Focus

We also wished to uncover some of the reasons leaders had a hard time filling positions in the past. 57% declared that they’ve noticed a lack of motivation, attitude, or interpersonal skills, while 42.8% reinforced that they saw a lack of technical skills or qualifications. It is safe to say that there will be an increased focus on candidate skills in the upcoming year.

Recruitment Channels

Online job boards/postings emerged as the most popular choice for 85% of respondent using it, followed by word of mouth, recruitment and staffing agencies, personal contacts, referrals, and informal networks.

These methods were also deemed the most effective in finding qualified candidates. These findings align with those of a Google Research, which highlighted the popularity of major recruitment websites among recruiters.

Outsourcing Recruitment

A notable trend highlighted in the 2023 Employ Recruiter Nation Report is the consideration of recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) by 55% of HR decision-makers in 2024. RPO is seen as a strategic move to navigate the volatile job market effectively.

Conclusion: Looking Ahead

The survey offered valuable insights into the hiring challenges and preferred recruitment methods for businesses preparing for 2024. By leveraging these insights, organizations can refine their hiring strategies to effectively attract and retain top talent.

The age of AI – reinforces leaders to evaluate skills and HR efforts in 2024

Leaders in various industries have expressed growing concerns about the age of AI and the urgent need to evaluate the skills of their workforce and HR efforts. In 2024, one of the main struggles faced by organizations is the task of upskilling permanent workers with AI and other tech skills. Leaders fear that they cannot train their employees fast enough to keep pace with the rapid developments in technology expected in the next three years. Consequently, there is a growing need for a more flexible workforce, making the option of using recruitment agencies increasingly attractive.

Employing agency workers is not just seen as a way to bring in an extra pair of hands but also as a means to access hard-to-find digital skills and higher-caliber candidates. The World Economic Forum (WEC) has highlighted that employing agency workers with knowledge of new technologies can be an effective way to spread understanding to permanent employees. This approach helps ensure that the entire workforce remains adaptable and skilled in the face of technological advancements.
