Senior HVAC Project Engineer / National Technical Lead – Mechanical Engineering Services
Position Overview
An established and well-respected mechanical engineering and services organization is seeking a highly accomplished Senior HVAC Project Engineer to serve as a National Technical Lead within its Project Engineering Services group. This role is ideal for a technically hands-on engineering professional who also brings strong leadership capability, strategic thinking, and the ambition to evolve into a senior technical leadership position within the organization.
The successful candidate will play a key role not only in the execution of complex HVAC projects but also in shaping engineering standards, mentoring teams, and driving the continued growth and expansion of the mechanical project engineering services division. This position offers a clear pathway toward broader technical leadership with influence over project execution methodology, engineering quality, and innovation across the business.
Key Responsibilities
Project Tendering & Front-End Engineering
  • Review and interpret tender and RFP documentation to ensure full compliance with HVAC and mechanical system requirements.
  • Support the timely and accurate completion of all project tender deliverables.
  • Review and finalize tender submissions, ensuring technical completeness, scope clarity, and alignment with contractual requirements.
  • Prepare and manage scope change documentation related to HVAC and mechanical system variations.
Project Execution, Completion & Closeout
  • Develop, maintain, and track HVAC-related punch lists to ensure successful project closeout.
  • Produce redline drawings and as-built documentation reflecting installed mechanical systems.
  • Prepare and present project closeout packages, including HVAC operating manuals and documentation, to clients.
  • Ensure seamless transition of completed projects to service and sales teams for long-term customer support.
Engineering Services Leadership & Technical Standards
  • Contribute to the development and execution of mechanical engineering service strategies, deliverables, and best practices.
  • Lead the establishment, maintenance, and continuous improvement of HVAC and mechanical engineering standards.
  • Serve as a technical authority, ensuring alignment with applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with internal and external engineering bodies as required.
  • Research and introduce emerging HVAC technologies, energy-efficient solutions, and innovative engineering approaches.
  • Support accurate equipment and material selection, pricing validation, and technical compliance.
  • Participate in field reviews and site visits, providing expert technical oversight.
Project Initiation & Kick-Off
  • Coordinate internal project set-up and administrative requirements for mechanical and HVAC scopes.
  • Support procurement and ordering of equipment and materials.
  • Lead and facilitate structured project kick-off meetings, ensuring stakeholder alignment and clarity of technical objectives.
Design, Engineering & Project Management
  • Prepare HVAC shop drawings, submittals, and equipment schedules in accordance with project specifications.
  • Develop detailed HVAC design drawings, calculations, and engineering technical documentation.
  • Review installation work for technical accuracy, code compliance, and alignment with design intent.
  • Build and maintain project schedules, progress updates, and technical reporting.
  • Prepare project-specific safety plans, methods of procedure (MOPs), and client documentation.
  • Provide onsite technical supervision, including quality assurance and safety oversight.
  • Monitor project costs, prepare progress billing, and support financial tracking for assigned projects.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario (required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 10–15+ years of progressive experience in HVAC system design, engineering calculations, and project execution.
  • Strong technical proficiency in HVAC load calculations, system selection, and energy-efficient design.
  • Extensive experience delivering ICI mechanical projects from concept through closeout.
  • Strong background in mechanical retrofit and modernization projects.
  • Proven experience with RFP responses and proposal development.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and develop engineering team members.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership capabilities.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and common project management and business software.
  • Willingness to travel to client and project sites as required.
