Environmental Project Manager – Downstream Oil & Gas Projects, Alberta

Position Summary
The Senior Environmental Project Manager will lead and manage projects focused on the downstream oil & gas sector in Alberta, supporting major oil & gas owner/ operators with complex site-specific environmental site assessment and risk mitigation programs. This role involves planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company policies. The Project Manager will work closely with clients, regulatory bodies, and internal teams to deliver high-quality environmental solutions.
Key Job Responsibilities
The job involves execution of projects related to environmental compliance, assessment, remediation and reclamation and environmental risk assessment. The work includes the following:
- As Senior Project Manager, lead and execute Phase I and II environmental site assessments & risk assessment programs and from conception to completion for major downstream oil & gas projects
- Sets and maintains project scope of works, reporting, schedules, invoicing and budgets, including project financial forecasting; makes decisions with respect to overall technical execution of the project; liaise with technical specialists or other environmental project managers to ensure the technical integrity of the project.
- Developing site specific guidelines, risk assessments and risk and/or remedial action plans.
- Working with multiple stakeholders to develop risk-based strategies to manage complex contaminated sites.
- Lead, mentor and coach project teams
- Supervises and mentors junior professional staff involved in carrying out field programs, ensuring project requirements are communicated and health and safety protocols are adhered to while actively promoting Health and Safety programs and culture.
- Proposal and report writing.
- Managing client relationships, attending client meetings and client development
- The job involves managing projects and/or being a technical lead for contaminated site projects for downstream oil & gas projects and job duties include the following:
- Developing work plans and cost estimates based on client’s project scope and managing scope change appropriately.
- Coordinating third party access agreements.
- Managing and overseeing complex ground disturbance.
- Implementing prime contractor management programs.
- Proactively project managing to ensure projects are completed in a timely, efficient and safe manner, satisfying the clients’ needs (scope, budget, deadline, etc.).
- Assisting and mentoring project staff with field and office-based tasks.
- Interacting with and reporting to clients and senior managers
- Technical report writing.
- Participating in technical meetings with clients, regulators, and stakeholders.
Experience / Qualifications
- Minimum 6-12 years of experience working in environmental consulting with a specific focus with contaminated site assessment, reclamation and remediation
- Graduate or undergraduate degree in environmental sciences, hydrogeology, geology, geological engineering, engineering geology, environmental engineering, or related discipline.
- Possesses environmental professional designation or eligible for registration with APEGA, AIA, or ASPB (e.g. P.Geo, P.Eng etc)
- Minium of 6- 12 years of environmental consulting experience
- At least 5 years of Downstream Oil & Gas consulting experience in Alberta
- Minimum of 3-5 years of strong Project Management experience
- Must have prior field experience performing Phase I & II site assessments including; experience with a variety of drilling techniques, soil and groundwater sampling, hydraulic conductivity testing, and monitoring well installation.
- Project Management experience must include: Taking projects from conception to completion, program management, project scope development, budgeting, invoicing, scheduling, subcontractor management, reporting, project recommendations
- Working knowledge and understanding of environmental legislation in Western Canada.
- Prior field experience.
- A strong understanding and experience with environmental sampling techniques (groundwater, soil, and vapour), data analysis, technical writing and reporting.
- Experience with Phase I and II environmental site assessments, groundwater monitoring, risk assessment (Tier 2 guideline development, etc.), soil/groundwater remediation.
- Experience with soil vapour sampling and vapour guideline recalculations.
- Experience with risk-based strategies and incorporating risk-based decision making into technical scopes of work.
- Prior experience in developing risk management plans to support acquisitions and divestitures.
- Experience with a variety of drilling techniques, soil and groundwater sampling, hydraulic conductivity testing, and monitoring well installation.
- Excellent client relationship management expertise and excellent communication skills
