Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the organization’s financial and accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting, compliance with Canadian accounting standards, and the implementation of strong internal controls. This role provides strategic financial insight to senior leadership and manages day-to-day accounting functions, budgeting, forecasting, payroll oversight, and audit coordination.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting
  1. Oversee full-cycle accounting operations, including:
    1. Accounts payable
    2. Accounts receivable
    3. Payroll oversight
    4. General ledger
    5. Bank reconciliations
    6. Month-end and year-end close
  2. Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  3. Ensure compliance with Canadian accounting standards (ASPE / IFRS)
  4. Maintain and review journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
  5. Lead consolidation of financial results where applicable
  6. Apply and oversee percentage of completion (POC) accounting for long-term, project-based work, including revenue recognition, cost tracking, and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
Budgeting & Forecasting
  1. Develop annual budgets and rolling forecasts
  2. Monitor budget-to-actual variances
  3. Provide financial analysis and recommendations to leadership
  4. Support strategic planning and cash flow forecasting
Compliance & Controls
  1. Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls
  2. Ensure compliance with:
    1. CRA requirements
    2. GST/HST / PST / QST filings
    3. Payroll remittances
    4. Corporate tax reporting
  3. Coordinate internal and external audits
  4. Support risk management and policy compliance
Leadership
  1. Manage and mentor the accounting / finance team
  2. Establish departmental procedures and best practices
  3. Support cross-functional leaders with financial reporting needs
  4. Present financial performance updates to senior leadership
Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  2. CPA designation required or strongly preferred
  3. 5–10+ years progressive accounting / finance experience
  4. 3+ years in a leadership or management role
  5. Strong knowledge of Canadian tax and accounting regulations
  6. Demonstrated experience with percentage of completion (POC) accounting in a project-based environment (required)
  7. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV or similar ERP systems is considered a strong asset
  8. Advanced Excel and ERP system experience
