BUILDING SCIENCE PROJECT ENGINEER (EXISTING BUILDINGS)

Overview
In this position you will have the opportunity to apply your expert technical knowledge to evaluate existing buildings and design solutions for the complex and unique problems of our clients. Projects will include a mix of major residential, multi-family, and commercial projects, with an emphasis on repair of damage from fire, wind, flood, and impacts, as well as adaptive reuse of older buildings, and enhancements to existing facilities to accommodate changes in use and implementation of equipment and machinery. This role is an excellent opportunity for an exceptional technical building science project engineer who is well rounded and excels at project management, onsite investigation, report writing, technical specification, design review, proposals, client relations, and mentoring and coaching teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the design, analysis, and implementation of building sciences engineering projects for existing buildings
- Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, and project managers to integrate building science principles into the design process for various types of construction projects, such as residential, commercial, and institutional buildings.
- Undertake investigations and perform on-site evaluations and assessments of existing buildings to identify potential concerns including; masonry, curtain walls, cladding, windows, structural rehabilitation, balconies, roofing, waterproofing, and parking garages.
- Analyze and interpret building condition assessments to identify areas of concern and implement corrective measures.
- Oversee field inspection and reporting for various building envelope restoration / construction projects.
- Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, and work with the Business Development team to prepare proposals for building science projects.
- Prepare specifications and work within the business development team in collaboration to manage tendering process;
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technologists.
- Review and provide senior-level consultation on technical reports and project specifications prepared by junior engineers and technologists for building envelope-related projects, assessments, and investigations.
- Review technical drawings and provide technical details to CAD technicians.
- Measuring of building dimensions and quantifying on site and from drawings.
- Interpretation and hand drawing of in-situ construction details.
- Maintain and develop client relationships
- Stay up to date with the latest advancements in building science, green building technologies, and building code standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Experience, Education and Certifications
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering, with a focus on Building Sciences, Civil, Structural, Building envelope or Architectural engineering.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of BC.
- Minimum of 7-12 years of relevant consulting engineering experience in building science engineering, with a focus on building envelope restoration, structural rehabilitation, and related projects.
- Strong understanding and technical experience with building science design engineering
- Experience with building energy performance, building energy analysis, energy audit or building energy retrofits is an asset (but not mandatory)
- In-depth knowledge of the BC Building Code and construction/contract legislation.
- Experience with client relations.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong technical expertise and experience with the design and restoration of building science components such as; masonry, curtain walls, cladding, windows, structural rehabilitation, balconies, roofing, waterproofing, and parking garages
Consulting expertise in areas related to building envelope engineering, and structural restoration of existing building structures
- Understanding of building construction, including methods, materials, and systems is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Exceptional attention to details, specifically in accuracy of calculations and completeness of data collection and notation.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
- Self-motivated, self-driven, and able to multi-task.
- Ability to act with business integrity and professionalism.
- Ability to provide leadership to junior engineers and technicians.
