Senior Accountant – Government Programs & Reporting

The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in overseeing the financial accounting, government program management, and reporting for the Canadian operations. This position requires expertise in Canadian GAAP, government incentive programs, and advanced Excel skills. In addition, familiarity with U.S. GAAP is a valuable asset, as this role will work closely with teams in the United States and Mexico. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in public accounting, preferably as a CPA, and experience managing incentive programs (e.g., SWODF). This is a long-term, strategically important position focused on government funding compliance, incentives, and annual tax filings.

**Key Responsibilities: **

Government Program & Incentive Management (Primary Focus):

– Oversee the government incentive programs specific to Canada, such as the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund (SWODF), ensuring compliance with funding requirements and deadlines.

– Maintain accurate records and documentation for capital expenditures to support government incentive programs, with a focus on cost reimbursement and incentive plan tracking.

– Coordinate the Research and Development (R&D) incentive programs, including capturing engineering hours, preparing accurate reports, and submitting claims for government review and reimbursement.

– Act as the primary point of contact with government agencies, external consultants (such as Deloitte), and auditors on all government incentive and compliance matters.

– Ensure all required information is compiled and submitted promptly for government audits and reviews of incentive programs.

Accounting & Financial Reporting:

– Manage core accounting functions for the Canadian side of the business, ensuring compliance with Canadian GAAP and reporting accuracy.

– Prepare monthly and annual financial statements, working closely with shared services teams in Michigan to integrate reports across U.S. and Canadian operations.

– Support the annual tax preparation and filing process, including coordinating with Deloitte to leverage their expertise in Canadian tax compliance.

– Prepare and manage annual compliance for government programs, including CPP, QPP, EI, and EHT.

Cross-functional Collaboration:**

– Work collaboratively with engineering, production, and project management teams to accurately capture and report costs associated with R&D and other funded projects.

– Liaise with internal departments to gather data required for incentive programs and ensure timely submission for program audits.

– Actively support the Canada-based and cross-border finance teams with insights into government programs and funding compliance.

Financial Analysis & Long-term Planning:

– Provide strategic insights into government program impacts on company financials, cash flow forecasting, and budget planning.

– Monitor and report on program-specific metrics, ensuring alignment with company objectives and incentive program requirements.

– Support senior management by providing analysis and insight into potential cost savings and efficiency gains through government programs and financial planning.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA designation is highly preferred.

Minimum of 5 years in accounting, with extensive experience in public accounting or audit, ideally with experience in government incentive programs.

Proficiency in Canadian GAAP; experience with U.S. GAAP is a plus. Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel and other financial software. Experience with ERP systems is an asset.

Government Incentives Expertise:** Strong understanding and hands-on experience with Canadian government incentive programs, including but not limited to SWODF and R&D incentives.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Capable of handling complex financial data, government reporting, and audits with accuracy.
  • Able to navigate and resolve financial and compliance issues related to government programs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to effectively interface with government entities and internal/external stakeholders.
  • Proficient in using financial software and advanced Excel functions to manage large datasets and produce detailed reports.

Preferred Qualifications:

– Knowledge of additional funding and tax incentive programs in Canada.

– Experience in a start-up or high-growth environment, ideally within a cross-border organization.

– Proficiency in U.S. GAAP is considered an asset.
