We are looking for a Concrete Restoration Specialist to join the Building Envelope Department. This role is exciting, diverse, and rewarding.

This role focuses on the consulting on the structural rehabilitation of existing buildings, parking structures, balconies, loading docks, etc. The ideal candidate is energetic, enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, and has graduated University with a Civil or Structural Engineering degree. In this role, you will complete condition assessments, design and contract administration on a wide variety of existing structures and their moisture protection systems. You will be exposed to conventionally reinforced concrete, precast concrete, post-tension concrete, structural steel, elastomeric traffic deck coating, mastic traffic deck coating, etc.

As part of the Building Envelope department, you will have the opportunity to experience engineering on many levels. You will work closely with colleagues and senior management on projects throughout all phases.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working on existing concrete rehabilitation projects from cradle-to-grave including: condition assessment, design, tender and construction review/contract administration.
  • Working independently to perform condition assessments of existing structures and their moisture protection systems (balconies, parking garages, loading docks, tunnels, etc). Assessment and testing techniques include: visual review, acoustic (chain drag) sounding, chloride ion testing, carbonation testing, water leakage testing, etc.
  • Authoring condition assessment reports advising clients on general structure condition, recommended repairs and estimated construction costs.
  • Designing repairs for existing structures and moisture protection systems. Systems include: conventionally reinforced cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete, post-tensioned concrete, structural steel, elastomeric traffic deck coatings, mastic traffic deck coating, etc.
  • Design work includes designing details for the CAD Department, and marking up technical specifications, and quantity estimates.
  • Exposure to structural calculations for residual carrying capacities of deteriorated structural elements, for changes in occupancy and use in retrofit designs.
  • Tendering design work on behalf the client to a pool of qualified contractors. Tendering work to include issuing tender call, attending pre-tender site meeting (with Project Principals), issuing addenda as required, summarizing the contractor’s costs and being client advisor for award recommendation.
  • During construction, responsible for monitoring quality of construction, budget and timelines.
  • Working independently to conduct field reviews to ensure construction work is in accordance with the design documents, track unit rate quantities, and track progress for the contractor’s payment certification.
  • Drafting site review reports summarizing progress and advising on deficiencies.
  • Act as the key contact for the contractor, and work to resolve deficiencies.
  • Contract administration tasks include preparation of Certificates of Payment, Contemplated Change Orders, Change Orders, Supplemental Instructions, Substantial Performance Certificates, etc.
  • Participating in client meetings from proposal development through to construction review, to understand client needs, provide support and nuture and develop client relationships and business development.
  • Some exposure to building envelope projects- roofing, cladding, etc.- in order to develop well-rounded understanding of building components and the firm’s various business units.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Science.
  • The ideal candidate has co-op or internship experience in building restoration, building science, or structural design at an engineering firm or construction firm.

  • Has a valid G driver’s license.
