Process Planner / Process Engineer – Precision CNC Machining & Assembly

Position Summary
The Process Planner/Engineer is responsible for developing, documenting, and optimizing manufacturing processes for precision‑machined components and assemblies. This role ensures efficient workflow, accurate process routings, cost‑effective production methods, and high‑quality output within a CNC machining and mechanical assembly environment. The ideal candidate has strong manufacturing engineering knowledge, hands‑on understanding of CNC machining, and the ability to collaborate closely with machinists, programmers, quality, and production teams.

Key Responsibilities
Process Planning & Documentation
  • Develop detailed manufacturing process plans, including routing steps, tooling requirements, machining methods, and inspection requirements.
  • Create and maintain process documentation (process sheets, setup instructions, work instructions).
  • Interpret engineering drawings, 3D models, and technical specifications to establish effective manufacturing workflows.
  • Define machining sequences, workholding methods, tooling lists, and cutting strategies.
CNC Machining Support
  • Support CNC programmers and machinists with tooling selection, fixturing, feeds/speeds, and process optimization.
  • Recommend process improvements to reduce cycle time and improve repeatability.
  • Validate machining processes through prototype runs, first‑article builds, and trial setups.
Assembly Engineering
  • Develop process plans and work instructions for mechanical sub‑assemblies and final assemblies.
  • Determine required tools, fixtures, torque specs, adhesives, and inspection steps.
  • Collaborate with design engineering on DFM/DFA improvements.
Costing & Quoting
  • Estimate machining and assembly hours for new RFQs and customer quotes.
  • Analyze manufacturing feasibility, material requirements, and process risks.
  • Work with purchasing to review supplier capability and cost inputs.
Continuous Improvement
  • Lead lean manufacturing initiatives, including setup reduction, workflow optimization, and waste elimination.
  • Standardize best practices across machining and assembly operations.
  • Support corrective actions related to non‑conformances and quality issues.
Quality & Compliance
  • Ensure process plans meet all customer, engineering, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support first article inspections (FAIs) and PPAP submissions as required.
  • Help maintain process controls, revision management, and configuration control.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with CNC programmers, machinists, assembly technicians, QA inspectors, and design engineers.
  • Participate in engineering change reviews and continuous improvement workshops.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 3–10+ years of experience in CNC machining, precision manufacturing, or process engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of multi‑axis CNC machining, GD&T, and machining principles.
Technical Skills
  • Proficient in reading complex technical drawings and GD&T.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks, CATIA, Mastercam, Fusion, etc.).
  • Knowledge of cutting tools, workholding, and machining optimization.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing principles and root‑cause analysis.
Soft Skills
  • Strong communication and documentation abilities.
  • Ability to work cross‑functionally and support production floor needs.
  • Problem‑solving mindset with attention to detail and process discipline.
Working Conditions
  • Office and shop‑floor environment within a precision manufacturing facility.
  • Interaction with CNC machines, assembly equipment, and inspection tools.
  • Occasional travel to suppliers or customers as needed.
