We have an available position for an Intermediate Estimator. The Estimator is an integral position that is responsible for utilizing tender documents, construction plans and specifications, and experience to prepare competitive, successful and profitable bid submissions for many different types of projects to a wide variety of clients.


  • Coordinate daily activities with the Tender Coordinator and manger
  • Review tender opportunities and provide recommendations to manager
  • Provide full service estimating for a wide range of projects including, but not limited to office renovations/alterations, building repairs and upgrades, base building system replacements, general construction, new buildings, additions, leasehold improvements, institutional renovations
  • Source tender opportunities through web and other bid services (Biddingo, MERX, DCN)
  • Review tender opportunities and provide recommendations to Manager
  • Review tender documents, tender forms, instructions, and specifications for minimum and mandatory requirements, pre qualification requirements, complete the tender checklist and update
  • Review tender documents to consider hazardous material handling (asbestos, lead, mold) and special circumstances (building issues – security, heritage, access, AODA, etc.)
  • Review tender documents to include the requirements of client safety, security, building and site access, hours of work, hoarding, phasing, etc. in the job costs
  • Prepare documents for invitation/notification/distribution to trades
  • Review drawings and documents for trades/suppliers required for tender and mandatory base building trades
  • Prepare RFI’s, distribute responses, follow-up as required on RFI’s and addenda
  • Review tender documents for schedule and phasing information to determine cost impact
  • Review tender documents for cash allowances, separate, alternate, and unit pricing, and cost breakdowns, and set up job costs and notify all trades bidding of closing requirements
  • Obtain/compile/check received quotes
  • Carry out all estimating services for tender opportunities, contract changes and value engineering exercises as directed
  • Carry out estimating tasks as required (take-offs, specialties pricing, investigation with suppliers and contractors, follow up with trades/site/etc.)
  • Prepare budget estimates for clients, consultants as directed
  • Maintain trade lists – update, add/delete, union info, etc.
  • Review addenda, distribute to trades and take appropriate action
  • Follow up with trades regarding pricing, inclusions/exclusions, compliance with tender docs
  • Maintain costing spreadsheets, cost estimating files, and job costs for future reference
  • Review tender documents and cost estimate with Project Manager on successful tenders
  • Work with Project Managers to provide estimates for changes/revisions to ongoing projects
  • Work with managers and administrative staff to determine tender requirements and direct as required (bonding, insurance, other submittals)
  • Work with PM’s, Clients, Architects, Designers to conduct value engineering exercises, options analysis, separate/alternate pricing solutions
  • Review proposed materials and equipment for suitability, cost, fabrication/delivery issues
  • Conduct pre and post bid analysis of project tenders as required
  • Work with staff to evaluate bidding trades post tender and post project to determine ratings for inclusion in future projects
  • Download tender opportunities and set up an electronic folder, assign a tender number, and add to tender list
  • Create and maintain tender lists, maintain and update tender files, electronic and hard copies


  • Minimum 3-5 years working as an estimator in the ICI sector
  • QS certification or equivalent is desirable
  • Certificate in Architectural or Civil Engineering Technology, or similar, is desirable
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience with many bid delivery methods – GC Stipulated Sum (D-B-B), Construction Management, Unit Price, Design-Build, Joint Venture, Guaranteed Maximum Price
  • Majority of work history should be commercial interior renovations, leasehold improvements, addition/renovation, and base building repairs and upgrades with emphasis on mechanical and electrical systems. Work in new construction, additions and civil/structural an asset
  • Experience estimating projects with asbestos, mold and lead abatement procedures and their impact on other trades
  • Good working knowledge of estimating programs such as Blue Beam is desirable
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Ability to obtain approved security status through the CPIC program administered by the OPP
