Job Description: Making Line Operator

The primary objective is to ensure that all brick going on a car will end up #1 and to minimize any impact on the kilns or dehack.

There are two distinct functions within the making area; texture and setting. The texture addresses just what it says, the texture and colour being applied to the brick and the setting end focuses on the cutting and handling of the brick from the making area to the kiln car.

Specific Job Duties

  1. Safety and Quality are paramount. Always make sure you are wearing any and all required Personal Protective Equipment and never work in a manner that would endanger you, coworkers or equipment. Never knowingly make anything other than #1 brick.
  1. The Texture operator is responsible for:
    • Ensuring the proper slurry is applied to the brick in the right quantity and distribution
    • Ensuring the proper texture is being applied to the brick
    • Ensuring the dimensions of the brick are correct
    • Ensuring the correct clay consistency at start-up, once running it is automated, but needs to be monitored.
    • Ensure the specifications on the Panel Fact Sheet are followed
    • Monitoring all critical characteristics at the texture end (die oil pressure, column height and width, vacuum level to name a few)
    • Making any and all adjustments necessary to ensure the above items are within specifications
  1. The Setting Operator is responsible for:
    • Ensuring slugs are travelling through the facer and wire bank properly
    • Ensure the face edge texture is being applied at the correct depth (if required)
    • Ensuring the cut brick is dimensionally correct.
    • Ensuring the brick is being set on the kiln car in the proper pattern
    • Ensure the specifications on the Panel Fact Sheet are followed
    • Monitor all critical characteristics at the setting end (setting pattern, brick dimensions, hack height, block alignment on car, etc)
    • Ensure the kiln cars coming into the setting area do not have any missing or misaligned deck blocks
    • Making any and all adjustments necessary to ensure the above items are within specifications
  1. Common for Both Operators:
    • Reject any product that is not #1
    • Maintain and monitor all equipment in your work area, issue work orders for maintenance as required.
    • Maintain the cleanliness of your work area.
    • Any other jobs as directed by your supervisor
